Everything you need to understand the category — written for newcomers, useful for veterans.
01
What is a memecoin?
A memecoin is a cryptocurrency whose value comes primarily from culture, attention, and community — not from a product, cash flow, or technical utility. The earliest example is Dogecoin (2013), launched as a joke based on the Shiba Inu “doge” meme. Today the category includes thousands of tokens across Ethereum, Solana, Base, and other chains.
02
Why do they exist?
Memecoins are the purest form of attention-as-an-asset. They strip crypto down to its social layer: a token is just a coordination tool, and culture is the moat. They're easy to launch, easy to understand, and easy to share — which makes them the fastest medium for capturing internet mindshare.
03
How are they created?
Most are deployed through permissionless launchpads (pump.fun, Believe, Virtuals, Clanker) in seconds. A creator picks a name, ticker, and image, the bonding curve handles initial price discovery, and once enough liquidity accumulates the token graduates to a DEX like Raydium or Uniswap.
04
How do they get value?
Value flows from a feedback loop: attention → buyers → price → more attention. Strong memecoins develop community rituals, recognizable art, and shared inside jokes. The market cap is essentially a real-time poll on cultural relevance.
05
How do you buy one?
1) Set up a self-custody wallet (Phantom for Solana, Rabby/MetaMask for EVM). 2) Fund it with SOL or ETH from an exchange. 3) Use a DEX aggregator (Jupiter, 1inch) or a terminal (Photon, BullX, Axiom) to swap into the token using its contract address. Always verify the contract — never trust a name alone.
06
What are the risks?
Volatility is extreme. Most memecoins go to zero. Rug pulls, honeypots, insider snipes, and liquidity removal are common. Treat any single memecoin as venture-style risk — small position, high variance, no guarantees. This is exactly why an index exposure exists.
07
Where does $ICM fit?
Picking individual memecoins is hard. The hit rate is low and the rotation is brutal. ICM lets you express a view on the category itself — long memecoin culture, without committing to any one ticker. Back the meta, not the moment.
08
How do you stay safe?
Use a fresh wallet for memecoin trading, never your main vault. Double-check contract addresses against official sources, ignore DMs and unsolicited links, revoke token approvals regularly, and size positions you can afford to lose entirely. Discipline is the edge — most losses come from chasing, not from picking wrong.
